To do this, click the adjustment layer and drag it onto the layer you want it to affect.Īdjustment layers are non-destructive. Here I moved the adjustment layer to group it with the text layer: The adjustment layer is affecting both the text and the photo. Here I have added a Channel Mixer adjustment at the top of the layer hierarchy: You can create a layer group and include the adjustment layer with the layers you want it to affect. This contains 22 items that, when clicked, will add a new adjustment layer to the file you are working on.Īdding an adjustment layer affects the layers underneath. With the Layers Panel, there is also a panel labeled Adjustments. But if you are new to this, you’ll have fun as you experiment with the different blend modes and the effects you can create with them. This works very much the same way as it does in Photoshop. So if you add a text layer, you can alter how the text looks by changing the blend mode. This means that the layer will interact differently with the layers below it. There are also options to change the blend modes of layers. The opacity of the layer can be reduced so that the layer below is revealed. The top layer is visible and may hide the layers underneath it, depending on the settings you choose for it. Layers in Affinity Photo can be resized and cropped so they are different dimensions than the original layer. You can continue to stack layers one on top of the other. When you have one layer, you can add new layers and also move them up and down in the Layers Panel.Īny image, shape, or text can be added in a layer. This shows in the Layers Panel on the left of your monitor. When you open an image in Affinity Photo, a new layer is created. I’ll show you some of the cool ways you can edit your photos and create graphics that would not be possible without using layers. In this article, I’ll introduce you to using layers in Affinity Photo. There is always more than one series of steps you can take to achieve the same results. As with any serious image-processing program, the learning curve is steep. So if you are used to Photoshop, the transition to using layers in Affinity Photo is relatively easy.Īre you new to post-processing your photos with software that allows you to use layers? You’re sure to learn some cool new editing tips and tricks as you read through this article.īeing able to stack images, text, shapes, etc., with layers in Affinity Photo provides unlimited scope for creativity. Thanks for going to such detail.Working with layers in Affinity Photo is very similar to how you work with layers in Adobe Photoshop. I know there are a few open source software choices for doing it. This would probably be a problem with photos but for illustrations not so much. You can see that the foreground 2D layer is near enough to the camera that it does't need any scaling but the sky & cloud layers had to be scaled way up to remain in the camera frame. The grey icon at the bottom left is the camera view. I don't know if I am describing this well enough for you to understand what I mean, but maybe this screenshot from Anime Studio Pro taken with the Orbit camera view will help a little with that. I then imported the images into the Anime Studio app & used its Z depth function to place each slice at an appropriate depth from the camera, scaled as needed to keep it in frame as I moved the camera to create an animation. What has worked fairly well for me is to slice up an illustration (I have never tried it with a photo) into layers representing the different 2D planes & adding some of the (faked) hidden parts to the deeper layers using AP's tools & exporting each layer as a separate raster image. You could trying faking it with several layers & manually adjusting their sizes & positions, but you would probably need to use the inpainting brush or some other method to create parts of the layers not originally present, & it would be hard to make the parallax effect convincing. Since this effect usually requires revealing & hiding parts of 2D layers & is not really apparent without motion, there is no simple way I know of to do this in AP.
